Lisa had lived in a tent with her partner and two dogs since September 2023, when our Outreach Team met her this past March.
Together, they worked on obtaining personal documents and income verification, which were all destroyed after storms had flooded their tent. Lisa worked with our team to complete several housing applications for affordable housing, which, unfortunately, were all denied. Then, the Gainesville Housing Authority opened its Public Housing waitlist, and Lisa was ready to apply and have a home of her own.
Finally, Lisa received a letter from The Housing Authority informing her that she was pre-qualified for a unit! She worked diligently with Outreach to submit a secondary application and her documents. Outreach assisted Lisa in acquiring an accommodation letter for limited mobility through the UF Street Medical team and documentation for her Emotional Support Animals. Our team also ensured Lisa had the transportation to attend her in-person interviews with the Housing Authority!
Lisa was approved, signed her lease, and received the keys to her new home just in time for Thanksgiving! Having left the woods for good, Lisa is enjoying this new chapter of her life and looking forward to getting a power chair to help her get around the city!
GRACE will always strive to be there for folks like Lisa who need support to get off the street and back into housing. YOU can be the reason why we are to help people find a place to call home. Please make a donation by clicking the button below.
